Fleas are Insecta, order Siphonaptera – an agile, dark colored, wingless insect with tube-like mouth-parts allowing them to feed on a variety of warm-blooded vertebrates including dogs, cats, humans, chickens, rabbits, squirrels, rats, ferrets or mice. Species include the Cat Flea, Dog Flea, Human Flea, Moorhen Flea (South America), Northern Rat Flea (rats and mice) and Oriental Rat Flea (tropical).
Fleas are able to jump vertically up to 7 inches – horizontally up to 13 inches. Comparably, if we had a Flea’s power, a 6-foot human could jump vertically up to 160 feet – horizontally up to 295 feet!
A Flea’s body is laterally compressed, allowing ease of movement through hairs, feathers or (in humans) under clothing. An adult Flea’s diet consists of fresh blood. In order to reproduce, a Flea must first feed on blood. More than three-quarters of a Flea’s life is spent somewhere other than on a host.
Habitat:
Fleas lay eggs in batches, usually on the blood host. After reaching their adult stage, Fleas ‘rest’ until a signal (vibrations including sound, heat, and carbon dioxide) is received that a host is near.
Prevention Tips / Treatment:
Fleas on humans can be treated with anti-itch creams or calamine lotion. In the home, frequent vacuuming is helpful. Diatomaceous earth is used as a remedy; however, its dust is harmful to pets and humans so use of a dust mask is strongly recommended. The grade used for pool filters should NOT be used for Fleas as it is not effective and, when inhaled, causes silicosis (lung disease marked by inflammation and scarring in upper lobes). Borax (a laundry booster) kills Fleas but pet safety is untested.
With antibiotics and improved hygiene practices, the recent confirmation of Fleas in the Flagstaff area carrying the plague (see ‘the Black Death’) is not a cause for concern (per staff at the Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics at NAU).
