Pest Control

Watts Pest Prevention Van - Watts PestEverything You Need to Know About Pest Control in Phoenix

Hire a locally owned and operated pest control company, because no one likes to find creepy crawlies roaming about their house. Some of these pests can hosts diseases and spread other unwelcome germs and bacteria throughout your home.

Whether these pests make you jump with fright or if you simply find them to be a mild annoyance, most of us tend to agree: We’d rather them not be there.

This is why, when it comes to pest control in Phoenix, it is wise to be thorough and careful in everything you do. Because of the climate in Arizona, these pests are plentiful – and they want to escape into the cool environment of your home every bit as much as you do after a little bit of time out in the heat.

The Importance of Professional Pest Control

No one likes having pests in the home. Some of them have far too many legs, gross us out, and they can creep up on you out of nowhere and frighten those who are more on the squeamish side. But aside from them giving you the heebie-jeebies, why is pest control in Phoenix so important?

As it happens, there are two other essential reasons to keep your home pest-free:

They can harm your things: Many of the pests we help to exterminate are capable of damaging your belongings. They can be destructive to any number of things, whether it’s paper, furniture, clothing, your walls, or – in the case of termites – the very foundation of your home.

By keeping these pests at bay, you can keep your important documents, your wardrobe, your furniture, and your home safe. Here at WATTS Pest Prevention, we’re in the business not just of eliminating these pesky critters – we help you to protect your home.

  • They can harm you: Even more important than harming your things, these critters can harm you. Some bite or stink, and the result can be anything from a painful pinprick to a venomous wound that requires medical attention. Aside from this, many also carry dangerous diseases and bacteria that can be transmitted to you and your family.

Keep those on your property safe by giving us a call – we’ll keep you and your family safe by keeping these critters at bay!

The Most Common Pests in Phoenix

The Phoenix area hosts many of the same pests you’ll see across the US. But in addition to commonly found pests, the desert environment also hosts a number of added threats like scorpions and tarantulas.

In your Arizona home, you should be prepared to contend with the following pests:

Termites: Once these little guys make their way into your walls, it is no parade trying to get them out. While termites are a threat in most of the United States, the battle against the bugs is even more significant here in Phoenix. This is because a large portion of the state of Arizona sits atop one of the United States’ most active subterranean termite belts.

What this means is that termites build massive underground colonies that can contain as much as 2 million individual termites. They use debris and mud to construct tubes, allowing them to have access to above ground wood – such as that in your home.

As if that wasn’t enough, subterranean termites aren’t the only type of termite plaguing Arizona. You also may encounter drywood termites, which travel inside infested wood and don’t require much moisture. These pests are able to remain undetected for long periods of time, until bits of wood eventually start to overflow from the tunnels inside the wood.

Termites are one of the costliest and most headache-inducing pests to rid your home of, but with the right termite control in Phoenix, you can make sure to get rid of the problem once and for all.

Ants: Ants are a major problem throughout the US, and Arizona is not an exception. Fire ants are among the most troublesome because of their painful stings. Carpenter ants are a close second because of their ability to tunnel into damp wood so they can build their nests. While they don’t eat wood in the way termites do, they can wreak havoc in moist environments, such as your kitchen or bathroom.

Cockroaches: There are many species of cockroach that call Arizona home, and all are known for their ability to carry around germs.

Of the five most common cockroaches in Arizona, the two that are most often found indoors are the German and American cockroaches. They are very difficult to get rid of, as they eat not only pet and human food, but also glue and leather.

Other types of roaches can find their way into your home through cracks, drains, and more, including the Brown Banded Cockroach.

Tarantulas and More Spiders: While tarantulas don’t often enter homes, they are frequently spotted outdoors. They’re not dangerous, but their bites hurt, and their large size makes many people squeamish.

Many other types of spiders inhabit Arizona, and not all are as harmless.  Some examples include the brown recluse and black widow, both of which have dangerous bites that would require someone to seek immediate medical treatment.

Scorpions: All scorpions are technically venomous, but the sting of most is no more harmful than a bee sting. Still, you likely don’t want one in your home!

The smallest scorpion found in Arizona also happens to be the most dangerous. This is the bark scorpion. It’s 2-3 inches in length, including the tail, and it injects in its victim a highly toxic venom that results in intense pain, as well as sometimes breathing difficulty or even convulsions. Immediate medical treatment should be sought out if someone suffers a bark scorpion sting.

Ticks: Over 25 tick species populate Arizona, but most of us will only come in contact with a few of them.

The brown dog tick is most often seen inside buildings and homes, and while they prefer dogs, they will feed on humans. In addition, these little critters can carry Rocky Mountain Fever, which is a potentially dangerous disease that requires swift medical treatment and likely antibiotics. It’s important to note that Lyme disease is rare in Arizona, as the ticks carrying it are not well adapted to Arizona’s dry climate.

Wasps and Bees: These pests are extremely common in Arizona, especially when the hot summer months roll around. Some are solitary creatures, while others prefer to live in large colonies.

Although these pests tend to be more annoying than dangerous, allergies are not uncommon. At the same time, killer bees are more aggressive than other species and may attack in swarms. All in all, you’re better off keeping them away from your property.

Bed Bugs: Bed bugs are considered a major problem across the United States, in everything from homes, to hotels, to dorm rooms, and beyond. Where people gather, so do bed bugs – but not if you know how to keep them at bay.

While they’re not truly dangerous, their bites itch and can cause uncomfortable rash. They are difficult to eradicate and will hitchhike from place to place.

Birds: Did you know that birds, including their droppings, and nest, can carry 60 different diseases that can be passed along to humans? Not to mention, those droppings can be unsightly and turn people away, and not everyone considers birdsong to be the stuff of fairy tales.

Some of the more screechy species of bird either need a few singing lessons or need to get off your property with bird (Pigeon) control in Phoenix.

Crickets: Aside from the annoyance of their constant chirping, these critters can damage clothing, paper products, furniture, and even your walls. By keeping these creepy crawlies at bay, you can keep your belongings safe your home a quiet and peaceful sanctuary at night.

Rodents: No one likes rodents, but aside from eating your leftovers and being generally cringe-worthy, these little guys can host some pretty deadly diseases.

Deer mice are especially common in Phoenix. These rodents can destroy your furniture, mattresses, clothing, and more – even chew through wiring and pose a significant threat of fire.

By rodent-proofing your home, you can save yourself the headache of dealing with them in the first place, safeguarding your home, possessions, and family from damage and diseases.

Weeds: While weeds aren’t like the other pests we’ve covered on this list, they are pests in your lawn that you don’t want there – and they’re persistent and easily spread. Like anywhere else in the US, you’ll find them here in Phoenix.

However, with the right methods and weed control in Phoenix to fight back, you can rid your yard of them once and for all.

Along with the Arizona heat comes pests of various types including the desert dwelling scorpions, ants, cockroaches, rodents, termites, weeds, pigeons and more…
